Job Purpose
Counsel students with a variety of problems by using psychological theory and research in therapeutic work and appropriately diagnose the course of action and next steps in order to support students with their mental wellbeing.
Key Accountabilities
  1. Provide one-on-one or group counseling and advisory sessions to students as required, such as disciplinary issues, attendance issues and attitude issues.
  2. Listen to students’ concerns about academic, emotional or social problems, and help them understand problems, define goals, and develop action plans in order to support their wellbeing.
  3. Assess students by requesting them to complete mental health needs, risk assessment and psychometric testing in order to formulate a psychological explanation of the student's issues.
  4. Follow up, counsel and advise ‘at risk’ students with academic or technical issues related to performance in class, and support students with medical or personal issues.
  5. Develop and maintain family outreach programs that help support students with academic issues.
  6. Organize and prepare training courses and workshops for students, covering various issues such as time management, effective study habits, etc.
  7. Assist in student extra-curricular activities such as sports, external trips, student visits, etc.
  8. Help raise awareness about mental and physical health, by organizing or participating in lectures, talks, workshops, and other social events.
  9. Improve the job tasks by undertaking research, either individually or as part of a team to develop diagnostic or therapeutic counselling techniques.
  10. Manage students’ files by writing reports and keep records for future reference.
  11. Maintain a database for all student cases and relevant documents including student progress reports.
  12. Complete any other job-related tasks as assigned by line manager within the expected time limit.

  1. Participate in developing the department/college’s operational and business plans, and contribute in its execution, in line with the department/college’s strategy in order to support the achievement of the University’s strategic objectives.

  1. Provide input to enhance the processes and procedures that help implement the relevant best practices.
  2. Follow all relevant processes, standard operating procedures, and instructions accurately to ensure that job tasks are carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.

Systems, Processes and Reports

  1. Generate relevant reports and ensure that they are prepared timely and accurately, and meet the department’s requirements and standards.
  2. Operate the required software/hardware accurately and effectively.

Required Qualification & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
  • 2–4 years of UAE experience in similar role preferably in higher education institutions.
  • Master’s degree in Psychology is a plus.
  • Priority is to UAE Nationals.
Required Skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to prepare professional documents, in both Arabic and English.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of medical, psychological, and technical evaluations of disabilities.
  • Knowledge of disability challenges and programs/thinking to support disabled individuals.
  • Strong knowledge of the UAE and international law regarding people with special needs.
  • Skill in developing and delivering specialized professional consultations and training on disability issues.
  • Highly socially aware and ability to build relationship with others and demonstrate empathy.
  • Excellent active listening and communication skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Logical and analytical thinker.
  • Proficiency in MS office applications.
