Sign Language Interpreter

Job Purpose
To help students with hearing-impairments and disabilities understand what is being said in a variety of situations such as during admission, registration, or classroom activities, and understand the subject matter in order to accurately translate what is being spoken into sign language.
Key Accountabilities
  1. Provide in-class interpretation and transliteration services using sign language communication for deaf and hard of hearing students in classes and/or laboratories.
  2. Assess student needs and the interpreting situation before and during assignments and makes adjustments as needed.
  3. Interpret from deaf and hard of hearing students’ contributions, reports, or discussions to the instructor and to the class; and interprets deaf and hard of hearing students’ questions directed to the instructor.
  4. Provide translation services in sign language in the classroom, exams, during all educational events and student activities.
  5. Assist students in academic research activities, assignments and reports, as well as coach them on how to conduct presentations.
  6. Coordinate with faculty and teaching staff beforehand in order to prepare in advance for classes by reading and becoming familiar with technical vocabulary and content.
  7. Support students and encourage them to engage in various activities, programs and events held inside and outside the University.
  8. Establish and maintain a good working relationship with students, faculty and staff members in order to provide better interpreting services.
  9. Prepare regular reports in order to identify the challenges and needs of deaf and hard of hearing students, as well as follow up the status and actions taken towards solving these challenges.
  10. Maintain strict confidentiality of incoming or outgoing information/data related to students with disabilities.
  11. Stay up-to-date with new developments and techniques in the interpretation field by attending workshops and conferences and reviewing current literature, legislation and technology.
  12. Complete any other job-related tasks as assigned by line manager within the expected time limit.

  1. Generate relevant reports and ensure that they are prepared timely and accurately, and meet the department’s requirements and standards.

Required Qualification & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Education or a relevant discipline.
  • Professional Certificate/Training in Sign Language (e.g. American Sign Language).
  • 2-4 years of UAE experience in similar role preferably in higher education institutions.
  • Priority is to UAE Nationals.
Required Skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to prepare professional documents, in both Arabic and English.
  • Excellent knowledge of Arabic Sign Language.
  • Knowledge of disability challenges and programs/thinking to support disabled individuals.
  • Excellent active listening and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Good knowledge of the UAE and international law regarding people with special needs.
  • Ability to understand and communicate complex technical information.
  • Highly socially aware and ability to build relationship with others and demonstrate empathy.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Proficiency in MS office applications.
